Imagine...............

As a reply to the "obama song" that the kids in the NJ school had to sing, I present an alternative that I swiped from the Big Hollywood blog site. The tune is "Imagine" by John Lennon

Imagine No Obama, it's easy if you try,
No teleprompters, no more healthcare lies,
Imagine all the people,
Going back to work.

Imagine no more bailouts, it isn't hard to do.
Lower unemployment, and lower taxes too
Imagine all the people,
Keeping what they've earned

You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one
Pursuing happiness and freedom,
It's called Capitalism.

Imagine No Obama, I wonder if you can
No need for Reed or Pelosi, get rid of Lindsay Graham
Imagine all the people
With their wallets full.

You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one
Pursuing happiness and freedom
And liberty for everyone.

Packing Heat In The House of God...............

Here's a interesting one for you.

I have recently started attending a church with my wife. and both the pastor and my wife have made it very clear that they wouldn't mind if I carried concealed while attending services.

I know that it's a good idea, since the trolls out there see churches and other places of worship as prime hunting areas. As the pastor said to me, " I am the Shepard of this flock, but I wouldn't mind knowing there was a sheepdog out there if needed." but still I feel just a little weird about it, sorta like wearing a hat at the dinner table.

So faithful readers and friends out yonder in blog land, what think you about this development?

Quick and Easy Summer Meal...............

I am still pretty much focused on food these days. I haven't been able to get out to reenactments or to do any shooting, so cooking is all that's left to do. -grin-

We didn't do much for a garden this year so friends and neighbors are bringing their excess veggies over to share. While prowling around in the kitchen I discovered that we had a bunch of squash sitting around so I decided that I would made the Memsahib a quick and easy dinner, Squash, Eggs and Onions.

I know, it sounds weird but just try it. I am sure that you will like it just like we do.

Here's what you will need:

8 strips of bacon
2 medium to large yellow squash
1 medium yellow onion
8 eggs
1 garlic clove
2 tablespoons of grated cheese

Cook your bacon to your desired doneness, draining the excess fat from the pan, reserving two tablespoons. Chop the squash, onion and garlic. Place the onion in the pan with the two tablespoons of bacon fat and over medium heat cook until the onions are slightly browned. Then add the squash and cook for 4 minutes. Then add the garlic and cook for three more minutes, stirring frequently until the mixture becomes fragrant. Whisk the eggs and add them to the pan stirring them until they become mixed with the squash and onions and the eggs become scrambled. Once the eggs are done to your taste, then sprinkle the top of the eggs with the the cheese and add the bacon.

Enjoy!

A Pirate's Life For Me.............

My friend Brigid over at her blog, "Home on the Range" a while back made mention of a firearms combat course to be shot with weapons of the golden age of piracy. I'm talking flintlocks, cutlasses and such. I love the idea, since I have all the toys that would be needed. Expanding on the idea just a bit, and because today is Talk Like a Pirate Day (And also because I can't eat like I could before my hospital trip) I thought that it might be fun to have a period correct meal after the shoot.

Thanks to the book " The Sea Rover's Practice" by Benerson Little here is a menu you might be interested in.

Buccaneer Pork.

The term Buccaneer comes from the Haitian word boucan. This is a wooden frame that meat was smoked on. Wild pigs were very common in the islands so were a major source of food. The Buccaneer would cook whole pigs on the boucans taking the skin and bones of the butchered pigs and tossing into the fire for more smoke. They also used a baste of lime and lemon juice, salt and pepper, mixed with crushed Jamaican allspice for flavor and to keep the meat moist. The Buccaneer would sometimes fill the body cavity of the pig with this mixture and add small game birds before cooking.

Since a whole pig might be a little difficult for most people to deal with, you can take a pork roast or pork loin and cook it on the grill basting it frequently with the above mixture. You can also make up extra so that it can be placed on the table as a dipping mixture for your guest.

Salmagundi

When you think of Salmagundi, think of a chef salad with attitude. This was a wildly popular salad in the 17th and 18th century. It is said that the pirate Bartholomew Roberts was enjoying a breakfast of this salad just before being killed in battle by the Royal Navy. Use your imagination on making this up. Make a bed of any green leafy veggie, such as lettuce, spinach, or anything else that you might like. Then take chopped onions, cheeses, olives, (black and green) capers, hard boiled eggs, anchovies, smoked ham, roast beef, chicken, or anything else that strikes your fancy. Dress with olive oil and vinegar, garlic or lemon or line juice. Again, let your imagination run wild, there were as many recipes for Samagundi as there was people who enjoyed it so nothing you put in it would be wrong.

Bread

Round loaves of a very crusty bread are recommended, let each guest tear off what they desire.

Drink

Bomboo or Rum punch

A punch of Rum, dark muscovado sugar, lemon or lime juice and water. The finishing touch is to dust the top of the punch with freshly ground nutmeg. Now to be absolutely accurate, you should make this with the cheapest rum you can find and with the juice of key limes, but I say that you can fudge a wee bit for better taste.

English Lemonade

Mix Cannary Sack, sugar, lemon or lime juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove to taste.

Beveridge

(For those who do not care for alcohol) Spring water, sugar and orange juice

Dining suggestions

This food and drink should be served communally, since your average pirate or buccaneer didn't have fork, plate or much else. A knife and fingers were the only eating utensils available. Individual mugs were available but not always.

Have fun with this menu!

The Year Without Summer....................

For me, this was indeed the year without summer. All the time that I spent in the hospital just sorta made it go "poof".

While I am not much of a summer person, I did miss seeing lighting bugs flitting around in the yard, the taste of fresh corn on the cob as well as a tomato fresh off the vine that the good wife planted outside the back door. Back when, I could set down with a good sized tomato, loaf of white bread, jar of mayonnaise, salt and pepper and have a pretty good feed. -grin- Remember that 'matter sandwiches are a old southern tradition, so don't be rolling your eyes. -grin-

I am very slowly making progress in getting back to semi-normal. I can get around the house for the most part without my walker and can hold some food down. Not where I wanted to be at this time but I guess that it could be a heck of a lot worse. (I gotta keep reminding myself that every chance I get, doctor's orders)
