Today In History.................

In 1842.....

Dr. Crawford Long of Georgia performed the first operation where the patient was under general anesthesia. He used ether on a patient before removing a tumor from the patient's neck.

In 1858.....

The first patten was issued for a pencil with an eraser. (Thank goodness for that, since I have always wore out more erasers than pencils)

In 1867.....

The U.S. bought Alaska from Russia for the sum of $7,200,000 in gold.

In 1870.....

The 15th Amendment was passed guaranteeing the right to vote to all men, regardless of their race. (Women however, had to wait a bit longer)

In 1932.....

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
